Annual Report 2022

Dear Friends:

As two people who have been with Lidè from the beginning and who have witnessed both its growth and challenges over the past nine years, it thrills us to share our progress in 2022 with you.

This year, Haiti has faced shocking national security, political, and economic threats, yet our amazing team at Lidè has illustrated powerful dedication and creative flexibility to achieve dramatic expansion against all odds. Throughout this time of tests, we have become stronger, more hopeful, and, thanks to the generosity of a growing international donor base, more sustainable than ever.

We are delighted to report that we are serving 50% more young women and have increased our scholarship offerings nearly tenfold.  We have also been able to add ten new teachers to our team, and to hire our first ever Director of Finance and Director of Operations. With over a thousand girls across Haiti participating actively in the program, 30 program facilitators, a thousand meals served every week, and 8 program locations, we are poised for unprecedented impact.

In the face of so much unrest in the country, we have also learned to better adapt to unexpected challenges.  Amidst lockdown this fall, we found new ways to be productive and keep our programs and offices open. For example, in many of our locations, staff would go to meet participants after school and accompany them to Lidè classes to ensure their safety. Lidè facilitators in the communities would also offer their own homes to receive participants for activities. And, staff that lived within the communities would offer consistent tutoring to the girls.  As a result, the relational bond between Lidè and the parents and families of the girls also became much stronger, inspiring a core group of engaged parents to become more active in our work.

Looking ahead, we are excited to sustain our growth while adding new offerings, such as financial education courses and the opening of our community library named for our cherished Founding Board Member, Laurence Camille, which will be available to all residents in the areas where we work.

We are so very grateful for the tens of thousands of supporters who continue to make all this progress possible. You have helped us to plant the seeds of transformation and to move toward a more just and equitable world, guided by the hope, pride, and confidence of an empowered female vision.

Mèsi Mèsi Anpil and with love to all,

Holiday Reinhorn, Lidè Co-Founder

Soeurette Rigodon, Lidè Country Director

ARTS PROGRAMS

A highlight of this year was our new partnership with Hope on a String, an organization that empowers youth and strengthens communities across Haiti through the arts.  They provided theater and traditional dance classes to Lidè participants as part of our summer camp and offered professional development for our staff through skill building workshops.

We also hired 10 new art facilitators to serve our growing programs!

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

In 2022, we expanded our primary and secondary school scholarships, growing from 134 scholarships to 1,150—an increase of over 850%.

To achieve this, our team conducted home visits, met with school principals, analyzed and reviewed the piles of applications that came pouring in, and gathered parents to discuss scholarship responsibilities.

They also considered what additional support girls would need to be successful in school, such as meals and transportation support.

The growth of our scholarship program is a part of the legacy of our Founding Executive Director, Dr. Kathryn Adams, who fiercely championed girls’ right to education and would no doubt be thrilled to see this progress.

SUMMER LITERACY

SERVICE PROJECT

This summer, we also piloted a new community service effort to bolster literacy in the community. Our participants and staff were supported through training from our wonderful Board member, Laurence Camille, who has extensive experience in literacy curriculum development and training.

Participants offered free daily literacy instruction to dozens of children in two national schools in Haiti throughout the summer.

While initially the program started with 19 children, by the end of the summer, it had grown to serve 53.

HEALTH PROGRAMS

In 2022, we added a new program in Les Coteaux to focus on psychosocial support.

Working in collaboration with the Haitian Association of Psychology, the program offered 50 psychoeducation workshops across schools, health centers, churches, police stations, and courts.

Based on identified mental health needs from those initial workshops, several hundred people participated in group therapy and received individual therapy.

What we initially thought would be an effort that reached a few hundred individuals reached 4,000 people!

As part of this effort, Lidè's staff also engaged in extensive training on topics including: stress management, children's and women's rights, support for victims of sexual violence, psychological first aid, and more.

We are grateful to the Obama Foundation's Girls Opportunity Alliance, which supported our project as a featured organization, helping us to raise the funds to bring the project to fruition.

IN THE ARENA

This year we had the privilege to present our work in various national and international fora.  We participated in a global panel for Earth Day on girls’ education and climate change hosted by the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance, joined a panel hosted by Hart’s Haiti about the arts and environmental education, and participated in TheirWorld’s “Let Me Learn” campaign to promote universal education at the United Nations Transforming Education Summit.

OUR GROWING TEAM

By the end of the year, we had 82 staff members at Lidè. This includes 14 new staff that joined us this year, including our first Director of Finance, our first Director of Operations, and nearly a dozen new facilitators to staff our growing programs.

We are profoundly grateful to our incredible staff, who have worked tirelessly with incredible expertise, devotion, and adaptability under very challenging circumstances facing Haiti.
